Proper Auto Maintenance Essential

Proactive auto care is one sure way to avoid problems with your vehicle in the middle of a traffic jam or while traveling on America's highways. A recent article on a major news site suggested readers need only use their senses to remain apprised of impending concerns with a car or truck.

In other words - if you see, hear or smell something out of the ordinary with your vehicle do not avoid addressing the issue because it is bound to get worse and could put you, your family and other unsuspecting drivers on the road in danger.

For instance, if you see a leak developing under the car and then detect a burning odor emanating from your engine when driving - this is a signal that you need to have your car examined for low fluids and/or cracked hoses.

It is certainly an indication that your car needs to be attended to by a professional mechanic - unless you are qualified to deal with auto problems yourself. Too, if you hear the sound of squeaking beneath you it could be an indication of the need to have your brakes replaced or even something more serious.

Finally, be sensitive to how the car feels when you're driving - or rely on your sense of touch. If your steering wheel begins to shake it could mean you've blown a tire.

Taking your car into an auto shop for regular maintenance can be a lifesaving move for all involved. After all, what is the cost of a tire or other auto repair in comparison to the fallout of an auto accident - that could have been avoided altogether with proper planning?

Burn Injury

Burns are the third leading cause of death in the United States and children comprise half of all burn victims. In addition, the elderly are also particularly vulnerable. Burns are diagnosed according to how deep a burn injury is - and are classified as first, second and third degree.

A first degree burn is the least serious of the three. Only the surface of the skin has been damaged. A second degree burn has reached the second layer of skin - and is sometimes known as a partial thickness burn.

With second degree burns the skin will blister and fall off - exposing the nerves below. With third degree burns both layers of the skin are destroyed - and many times so are the nerve endings as well.

There are a variety of methods used to treat burns. These include burn ointment for the least severe - and antibiotics and bandages for the progressively more serious burns. In addition, the burn may require the use of a pressure garment to help reduce scarring.

The most serious burns may require skin grafts. Too, people with serious burns may be transferred to and treated at centers dedicated to caring for burn victims.

Researchers are continuously searching for better methods of treating burn victims.
Some of the more recent information they've discovered covers such things as skin regeneration and pain reduction. Finally, there is also work being done in the area of product design aimed at making materials that will ease burn victims' pain.

Car fires can kill

2010-06-19_10.30.45.jpg

In our previous blogs concerning vehicle fires statistics were given that demonstrated their prevalence is nearly epidemic - a car fire occurs every 96 seconds in this country.

According to the triple A, about 266,000 car fires resulted in 520 deaths. The AAA goes on to say that nearly 75% of vehicle fires can be traced to poor car maintenance as the leading factor.

There are at least six flammable fluids under the hood of a car that can start a fire if they drop onto other surfaces. All hoses, lines, caps and filters should be inspected regularly and replaced when they show signs of wear.

In fact, experts advice drivers to watch for fluid leaks under your vehicle, cracked or blistered hoses, or wiring that is loose, has exposed metal or has cracked insulation. Have any of these conditions inspected and repaired as soon as possible. Equally important, listen to the sounds your car is making.

For instance, a noisy exhaust pipe requires immediate attention.
Not all vehicle fires are the result of poor car maintenance though. Twenty five percent are the result of collisions in which gas or other fluids explode. However, if your car catches fire remember to pull off to the side of the road and exit the vehicle immediately.
